Our first finished syrup is out of the evaporator and on the breakfast table.
The big storm slowed the sap flow for now but the forecast looks hopeful
for a good run later in the week.
Our long time friends, the Vorwerks, came to volunteer this week. The
whole family is talented and we love it when they come to help. Mike
and I made lists of what we hoped to accomplish while they were here.
The weather was absolutely horrible but somehow the guys managed
to finish their list before us, even taking breaks to go town for “parts”
(and cinnamon rolls). I didn’t take any pictures of their work - it was
essential, but not too exciting - like fixing brakes and lights on the ve-
hicles - but here are some pictures of some of our accomplishments
over the two days.
Sandy and I dyed yarn to sell at MACHE.
We had to get creative to find safe places to hang it to dry…
We sewed muslin bags to store the finished yarn.
Sandy designed and wove baskets to display our cards for the general store.
In spite of all that, the guys still won the 2011 “List Awards.” Great job, guys.
Thank you for all the hard work, Vorwerk Family!
Our shearer came on Wednesday for the annual wool harvest. David shears
internationally. He is amazing to watch and always teaches us something
new about sheep management. Kevin, Anna and Sarah kept the process
going smoothly.
Becky and Anna skirting warm fleeces.
All of a sudden spring is on the horizon and the sap is running. We have
about 250 taps in the trees and the buckets are already overflowing. It took
Becky and the kids plus a few neighbor friends over 3 hours to collect yes-
terday. We are looking forward to firing up the evaporator tomorrow.
Kevin drilling holes.
Gus pounding taps.
Bucket head boy.
Evelyn tasting sap for the first time.
She loved it!
Sap dripping into the buckets in the quiet woods is one of my very favorite sounds. ever.
The ice rink is a giant puddle today but it was a big hit this winter, providing
winter fun for several groups and lots of neighborhood animal ball and hockey.
