Last week we hosted a stock dog clinic with Julie Hill, an accomplished handler
from Scotland who is the only woman to ever win the International Supreme
Championship. She was as delightful as she is talented. Twelve handlers and
fourteen dogs worked with Julie over the course of three days to improve their
abilities to read sheep and communicate with their dogs while working stock.
Becky, Megan, Madeline and I all had the opportunity to take lessons with her
before the clinic started. Each one of us learned so much because of her truly
unique ability to explain the knowledge she’s acquired through many years of
working her dogs on the hills in Scotland. Thank you, Julie.
On Wednesday we welcomed Spice, a very calm and gentle, seven year old
mini donkey. She is due to deliver in the middle of September. Her sweet
personality makes her fit in perfectly.
Last year the First Baptist Church of Whitehall’s youth group traveled to West
Virginia to partner with World Vision, working on repairing homes in Appalachia.
This year they journeyed all the way here to Harvest Home Farm to serve their
local community instead. Eighteen teenagers and four adults spent five evenings
playing, worshipping and camping here together while they spent their days work-
ing hard, serving their neighbors. The projects ranged from making firewood, gar-
dening and painting to building, refinishing, cleaning and even… washing cows.
It was truly a privilege to serve their group and see young people making a differ-
ence in their world for Jesus.
We are in the process of upgrading the electrical layout around the farm. After
blowing fuses during the wedding reception in the barn loft, the project got up-
graded to urgent. Last week I trenched wire to the pavilion. Becky and I also
spent a few hours at Menards, picking out lights that we hope will meet both our
goals of functional and attractive. We still plan to also upgrade the overall ser-
vice and trench power to the new maintenance building.
HHF welcomed back Josh Calhoun for a concert in the barn loft. We all
enjoyed Josh’s mix of gospel, folk and worship music. His son, Jonathan,
loved seeing all the animals around the farm. Thanks for another great
evening, Josh and Amanda!
